9:00am: How Firm a Foundation
Presented by Marilyn Mitchem
In December 1899 missionary Katherine Plantz left Wisconsin and traveled to Tennessee.
With the help of William C. Wood and others, she built a three-story mission house. By 1904 Ebenezer's staff
was caring for nine homeless boys. All were photographed for a promotional poster titled "The Ebenezer Family."
Marilyn will speak about the people pictured, focusing on the Rector brothers whose "firm foundation" at Ebenezer
transported them across the Appalachians to the Great Lakes.
On her own journey, Leonora Whitaker joined Ebenezer Mission's staff in December of 1909.
Her trip by mule to James Lunsford's home to teach Sunday School resulted in an unexpected dunking in Big Creek.
Leonora's account of this mishap later became Chapter Ten of Christy. Marilyn will retell this story, using
a recently-discovered interview and article of Leonora's, and compare it to Christy's version.
The common tie between both vignettes is the home William C. Wood built and later sold to James Lunsford.
It still stands near the corner of Old Fifteenth and Sol Messer Road. We'll visit this landmark on Sunday when we re-create
Leonora's March 1910 trip there.
11:00am-Approx 7:30pm: Between River and Railroad
Depart from Del Rio Elementary Parking Lot
Saturday we will board a charter bus for a special day trip that follows elements of Christy's journey from Asheville.
We will stop in historic Hot Springs, NC, for lunch. This will be followed by a visit to the historic Montford neighborhood which is reminiscent
of where Christy would have lived. We will tour the evocative Riverside Cemetery and some of its famous Victorian-era graves and hand-carved monuments.
As the day continues we will work our way to picturesque Asheville itself, stopping at First Presbyterian Church where the Huddleston family
worshipped. Our trip back to Tennessee takes us between the railroad and the river emulating Christy's journey. More information to be added!
Please note the cost of meals is not included in the day's fee.
